i understand that my previous post was to a certain uncomprehensible. so i have found something a little lighter to touch on.
for those of you who are curious.
it’s a french movie titled happily ever after.
the song is creep by radiohead.
what i really like about the implementation is that even if you are watching the video for the first time you are able to pick out the gist of what is going on just by the ongoing lyrics from the song and the characters’ body language.
the woman feels a sense of attraction for the guy ( a very cool looking Johnny Depp ), but yet hesitates to approach him in any manner except to look at him. No matter how compelled she feels, she does not do anything in the end and instead fumbles upon the 2nd encounter with him.
Notice the lyrics is about someone with an inferiority complex against the person of interest. It is hence so appriopriate for the setting and the scene. For those of you who do not know (SPOILER ahead), the woman in the clip is a married woman. Her husband is actually cheating on her with another woman.
Nothing of relevance but notice the sexual promiscuity of the french culture here.
the faulty relationship with her husband maybe the root of her inferiority. as human beings we are all aware of status although it’s popular to pretend we don’t care about status at all.
those suffering from an inferiority complex lack self-confidence and tend to withdraw completely from their social circle. the lyrics of the song had beautifully expressed the feelings of the woman in the video.
Although no words are spoken by the characters in this video, the good use of oculesics (eye contact) and kinesics ( facial expressions and body language) were enough to express the feelings that the lady felt for the man.
In addition, the acoustic music is also very suitable for the scene in the video. This further illustrates the beauty of nonverbal cues. We use such nonverbal cues all the time, though we may not take note of it. Well in fact, I feel we use nonverbal cues more often than we use verbal cues to communicate with people. Sometimes we don’t have to say a word and people can atleast get a gist of how we are feeling.
damn i used to listen to that song alot. Haha. is this version by radiohead too? Kool version.
Well, nonverbal cues galore! i was just wondering, could we have paired this scene with other songs, and produced the same effect? how about Dido’s ‘Thank You’? Hmmm.. i know this sounds random, but like you pointed out, the scene without converstation has already managed, thru the nonverbal cues of the pair, to convey the gist of what’s going on between the two of the main characters, or at least how one of them is feeling towards the other. I believe we might be able to slot in other songs and still produce more interesting effects. (=
talk about connection at the most fundamental level. and funny you should choose acting and music to explain this. These are possibly 2 of the most spontaneous forms of communication in the known human psyche.
I bet the woman is gonna be kicking herself the whole day for not getting to know the guy when she had so many opportunities to do so.
and this is such an emo song.
eh… i think it’s largely true that, regardess of sex, when you’re sexually attracted to someone, you tend to shy away, so can’t really blame the lady in this case, especially when it’s expected of the gentlemen to broach this subject.
anyway, i guess there aren’t any ‘Happily Ever Afters’ in a dysfucntional marriage, are there? the movie title sounds kinda… oxymoronic.
interesting feedback guys. well at least for the girls who do come across my post.
next time do something about it besides looking at the guy.
